How the free color analysis works

1. On-device AI finds your features

A face-landmark model maps 478 points on your selfie — entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, ever.

2. It measures your true coloring

The tool samples your skin, eye, and hair colors and converts them to the CIELAB color space to read your undertone, depth, and contrast — the same three axes professional analysts drape for.

3. You get your season + palette

Your measurements map to one of the 12 color seasons, with your power colors, the shades to avoid, and the makeup colors that make you glow.

The 12 color seasons

Every person's natural coloring lands in one of twelve seasons — four families (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter), each split by which quality dominates: lightness, softness, depth, or brightness. Tap a season to see its full palette and makeup guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is seasonal color analysis?

Seasonal color analysis matches your natural coloring — your skin's undertone, its depth, and the contrast between your skin, hair, and eyes — to one of 12 color seasons. Each season comes with a palette of colors that make you look vibrant, and a set that washes you out. Professional in-person analysis costs $150–$500; this tool gives you a free starting point in seconds.

How does the free color analysis work?

Our AI locates your face and samples the actual pixel colors of your skin, eyes, and hair. It converts them to the CIELAB color space (the same math colorists use), measures your undertone with the hue angle, your depth with lightness, and your contrast from the spread — then maps you to one of the 12 seasons.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The entire analysis runs inside your browser using on-device AI. Your photo is never uploaded, stored, or seen by anyone — you can verify this in your browser's network tab.

What photo works best?

A front-facing selfie in natural daylight (facing a window is perfect), no makeup, hair as usual, no strong filters. Even lighting matters more than camera quality.

What are the 12 color seasons?

Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, each split into three: Light, True and Bright Spring; Light, True and Soft Summer; Soft, True and Deep Autumn; and Deep, True and Bright Winter. Springs are warm and clear, Summers cool and soft, Autumns warm and muted, Winters cool and vivid.

How accurate is an online color analysis?

Photo lighting and screen calibration mean no online tool is as precise as an in-person draping session — but with a good photo, the analysis lands in the right season family for most people, and it's a genuinely useful starting point. The Vella app goes deeper with a full palette and makeup shades matched to your exact features.
