Why the same wing works on one person and not another
A hooded lid eats a fine line
If a fold covers your lid, a thin line disappears the moment you open your eye. Build it thicker — and map it with your eyes open, looking straight ahead, not down.
The corner decides the angle
A downturned corner drags any line that follows it, so the wing has to start above the corner and lift. An upturned corner already lifts, so a steep wing overshoots.
Shape decides the length
Round eyes elongate when you carry the liner past the outer corner. Almond eyes are balanced already, so following the lash line is enough.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I have hooded eyes?
Look straight ahead in a mirror with your eyes open. If a fold of skin from your brow bone comes down and covers most or all of your mobile eyelid, so there is little or no lid space showing above your lashes, you are hooded. If you can clearly see the lid and the crease above your lash line, you are not.
Why does my winged liner disappear when I open my eyes?
Because you drew it looking down. A closed or lowered lid is stretched flat, so the wing sits on a shape that stops existing the moment you open your eye — the fold drops back over it and takes most of the wing. Map it with your eyes open, looking straight ahead: draw a little, open, check, adjust.
Should hooded eyes wear thin or thick eyeliner?
Thicker than feels right. A fine line vanishes into the fold no matter how neatly it is drawn, so it reads as nothing at all. Build a thicker tightrope line along the lash root, and check it with your eyes open rather than closed.
Where should the wing start on a downturned eye?
Above the outer corner, never along it. A downturned corner drags any line that follows its natural angle, so the wing has to lift away from it — think of aiming at the tail of your brow rather than continuing the lash line.
Black or brown eyeliner?
It follows your undertone, and on a hooded lid it matters more than usual. Jet black gives a defined, high-contrast line. Espresso brown gives the same definition with less weight, which stops a thicker line from closing the eye down. Cool colouring suits black; warm colouring suits brown.
