SKIN TONE GUIDE

🫒 Olive skin tone

A green-gold cast over medium or tan skin — warm and cool both feel wrong

What olive skin looks like

Olive skin has a muted green or grey-gold cast, usually at medium, tan, or light-medium depth. It is an overtone, not a fourth depth. Classic undertone tests fail: veins look green (which is supposed to mean warm) while gold jewelry looks slightly off and pink foundation turns the face grey. Yellow foundation then looks orange. The match is neutral-warm, slightly muted, and never rosy.

  • ✓Your skin looks muted, greenish, or grey-gold in daylight, not simply peach or pink
  • ✓Pink or cool foundation looks ashy or grey, even at the right depth
  • ✓Very yellow or orange foundation looks too orange
  • ✓You are often typed as warm and still cannot find a shade that disappears
  • ✓Clothing in dusty teal, olive, warm beige, and terracotta tends to look better than icy pink or stark white

Foundation for olive skin

Neutral-warm or “olive” shades at your real depth — medium and tan are the common bands, not fair. Names like neutral golden, olive beige, warm neutral. The shade should not look pink and should not look bright yellow. If a line has no olive option, start from a neutral shade and add a tiny amount of green mixer rather than a yellow one. Green cancels the redness that makes olive skin look grey under pink foundation; extra yellow just turns orange.

Muted teal

Lips: Muted rose, terracotta, warm brown-pink, and brick. Cool baby pink and blue-fuchsia look detached from the skin.

Blush: Soft terracotta, muted apricot, or a brown-rose. Bright cool pink is the product that looks like a stripe.

Eyes: Olive, khaki, bronze, warm brown, and soft gold. Silver and cool purple eyeshadow emphasize the grey cast.

Skip: Rosy foundation, blue-based pink lipstick, and icy pastels. Also avoid “fixing” a grey match by buying a darker orange shade. The grey is an undertone miss, not a depth miss.

Color seasons that often match

Depth and undertone narrow the season. Contrast decides the rest — these are the usual matches, not a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

What is an olive skin tone?

Skin with a green-gold or muted cast, most often at medium or tan depth. Undertone is usually neutral-warm. Pink foundation looks grey, very yellow foundation looks orange, and vein tests say “warm” without the peachiness warm skin usually has.

How do I match foundation to olive skin?

Match your depth first (medium or tan for most people), then choose neutral-warm or a shade actually labeled olive. If it looks grey, it is too pink. If it looks orange, it is too yellow. A drop of green mixer in a neutral shade corrects the grey without adding more yellow.

Is olive warm or cool?

Mostly neutral-warm. The green cast is why cool tests fail and pure warm shades still look wrong. A small number of people have a cooler olive cast; they still cannot wear pink foundation, but bright yellow-gold will look even more off. When both fail, stay muted and neutral.

What colors suit olive skin?

Earth and muted jewel tones: olive green, terracotta, warm beige, teal, camel, brick. Icy pink, stark white, and electric cool colors emphasize the grey-green cast.
